A full interior and exterior detail takes three to five hours for most vehicles. Interior-only runs two to four, exterior-only one and a half to three, and a maintenance wash under ninety minutes. Paint correction and ceramic coating are day-long jobs.

By service

Express or maintenance detail — 60 to 90 minutes. Hand wash, wheels, vacuum, wipe-down of hard surfaces. Upkeep for a car already in good order.

Interior-only detail — 2 to 4 hours. Extraction, shampooing, leather conditioning, vents and crevices. Interior work is where the labour concentrates, which surprises people.

Exterior-only detail — 1.5 to 3 hours. Hand wash, decontamination, clay treatment, wax or sealant.

Full interior and exterior — 3 to 5 hours. The standard service and what most people mean.

Paint correction — 4 hours to 2 days. Single-stage on well-kept paint is half a day; multi-stage on neglected paint is genuinely two days.

Ceramic coating — most of a day, plus curing. Preparation is the bulk of it. Add 24 hours before the car should get wet.

What makes it take longer

  • Vehicle size. A three-row SUV has more glass, more carpet and more seat rails than a coupe. Expect 25 to 50 percent more time.
  • Condition. The largest variable after size. Pet hair alone can add an hour; ground-in stains, sand, spilled milk and smoke odour each add more.
  • Time since the last detail. A car detailed quarterly needs maintenance. A car never detailed needs restoration.
  • Add-ons. Engine bay, headlight restoration, odour treatment and pet hair removal are usually priced and timed separately.

Why a two-hour "full detail" is not one

This is the most useful thing to know when comparing quotes. Extraction, shampooing and machine polishing cannot be rushed — they take the time they take. A shop that can take your car at nine and hand it back at eleven has washed it and vacuumed it, which is a fine service, just not the one you were quoted.

Ask how long the job will take before you ask what it costs. The answer tells you more.

Does mobile detailing take longer?

No. The work is identical and so is the timeline. What changes is where the hours go — instead of driving there, waiting or arranging a lift, and driving back, the car is detailed where it already sits. For most people that is the difference between losing half a day and losing none of it.

Planning around it

For a full detail, assume the car is unavailable for most of an afternoon. Mobile work at home or the office means that does not matter much. Book earlier in the day if you can — heat makes products flash faster and makes careful work harder in the middle of a Texas summer afternoon.
