These two products get compared constantly, usually as if you have to choose a winner. You do not. Paint protection film and ceramic coating solve different problems, and the right answer depends entirely on what you are trying to protect against.
The short version: PPF is physical armour — a thick urethane film that absorbs rock chips and scratches. Ceramic coating is a chemical barrier — a hard, glass-like layer that resists UV, etching and staining, and makes the car dramatically easier to wash. PPF costs several times more. Most daily drivers are better served by ceramic; cars doing serious highway miles or carrying valuable paint often want film on the front end.
PPF is a physical layer you can feel, roughly the thickness of a business card, applied in sheets cut to each panel. It is thick enough to absorb an impact that would otherwise chip your paint, and the better films are self-healing, meaning light scratches disappear with heat.
Ceramic coating is measured in microns and bonds chemically to your clear coat. It is far too thin to stop a stone. What it does is resist things paint cannot resist on its own: UV fade, bird droppings, tree sap, hard water, road salt and general chemical etching. It also makes the surface strongly hydrophobic, so dirt releases instead of clinging.
Expect five to ten years of life from a quality film, and note that installation skill matters enormously — film is cut and laid by hand around complex curves, and bad work shows as lifting edges and visible seams.

The cost comparison people usually miss: a full-vehicle PPF job costs roughly what four ceramic coatings cost. Full-car film only makes sense on a vehicle where that maths is not the deciding factor.
That is not a sales line, it is what the use cases actually point to. The typical person searching this comparison drives a normal car, parks outside more than they would like, and is tired of the paint looking tired. Rock chips are an occasional annoyance rather than the main problem. Sun, sap, water spots, bird droppings and the general effort of washing are the daily reality, and those are exactly what coating addresses.
PPF becomes the right first purchase when chips specifically are the problem you are solving. New performance car, long highway commute, gravel roads, or paint you cannot easily replace. In those cases film on the front end is money better spent than coating the whole car.
