Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer — usually silicon dioxide based — that is applied to your paint and cures into a hard, transparent, water-repelling layer chemically bonded to the clear coat. Unlike wax, which sits on top and washes away, a coating becomes part of the surface and stays for years.

What it does

Resists UV. Sun is what fades and chalks paint over time. The coating takes that exposure instead of the clear coat.

Resists chemical etching. Bird droppings, tree sap, sprinkler water, industrial fallout and road salt are all acidic or mineral-heavy enough to etch clear coat if left. A coating does not make them harmless, but it buys you days instead of hours.

Repels water. The hydrophobic effect is the most visible benefit — water beads tightly and rolls off, carrying dirt with it. This is what people mean by the self-cleaning effect.

Adds gloss. A properly cured coating over corrected paint has real depth to it. This is the part that sells coatings and the part that matters least.

Makes washing easier. Dirt does not bond as hard, so a wash takes less time, less product and less agitation — which itself protects the paint.

What it does not do

  • Stop rock chips or scratches. A coating is microns thick. It resists light marring; it does nothing against physical impact. That is paint protection film.
  • Hide existing damage. It is transparent, so it magnifies swirls and etching rather than covering them. This is why correction comes first.
  • Eliminate washing. It reduces frequency and effort. It does not remove the requirement.

How it differs from wax and sealant

Wax is a natural or synthetic layer sitting on top of the paint. It gives warmth and gloss, and lasts perhaps four to eight weeks. It is cheap, easy, and temporary.

Sealant is synthetic, bonds slightly better, and lasts four to six months. A sensible middle option for a car you are not keeping long.

Ceramic coating bonds chemically, cures hard, and lasts years. It costs more up front and requires proper preparation, and it is the only one of the three that meaningfully resists chemical etching.

How it is applied

The application itself is a small part of the job. A proper installation runs: thorough wash, chemical decontamination to remove bonded iron and tar, a clay treatment to leave the surface genuinely smooth, machine polishing to remove swirls and etching, a panel wipe to strip any oils, then the coating applied panel by panel and levelled before it flashes. It then cures — typically 24 hours before the car gets wet, and up to two weeks to reach full hardness.

Most of that timeline is preparation. When a shop quotes a coating in three hours, that is what is missing.
